When compared to interstate moving, local moving might seem like a much simpler service, but just because you’re moving across town instead of across that country doesn’t make it an easier move. With that in mind, how do you find a great local mover? Not all moving companies are created equal.
Some movers specialize in long distance moving, others in local moving, and just a few movers are great at both services. You should be prepared to vet your local moving company the same way you would choose an interstate moving company.
Some advice on how to choose the best local moving companies:
Who Will Actually Be Moving You?
Did you know that many movers use different employees on their local moving crews than on their interstate moving crews? By law, interstate moving crews must be background checked and drug tested, but not local crews. To cut operations costs, many companies hire day labor for local jobs. These employees are not full time and there’s less accountability and reason to provide you with quality service. At Liberty, all of our employees are held to the highest industry standards set by United Van Lines. We never use day labor and all of our employees are background checked and drug tested.
Are They Experienced?
Most movers can pick things up and put them down in a truck, but it takes experience to get items out of your old home and into your new home without damage. Not only do our company leaders have over 75 years of industry knowledge and experience, but we pass on that knowledge to each employee who joins our moving crew. If we didn’t provide excellent service to our community, they wouldn’t have let us stay in business this long.

Let the Work Speak for Itself
Check online reviews for local moving companies. You can get a great idea of the service you will be provided by checking a BBB rating and a company’s online reviews. You can also look up company safety records with the Department of Transportation, by searching their DOT number.
You probably know someone who has recently moved. Ask which moving company they used and how they felt about the level of service provided. In fact, over 50% of our moves come from referrals and repeat customers.
Some movers have flat rates, some charge hourly. There are pros and cons to each. However, the most accurate moving estimates are performed in person. Each move is different, and unless a company representative has visited your home and assessed the scope of your move, they will have no idea what to expect on moving day.
Insured and Assured
Please make sure that your local mover takes an inventory on moving day. After the items are loaded into the moving truck, you should check the inventory to make sure everything was loaded. After delivery you should check off those items to make sure they arrived at your new home. This is the best way to make sure all your items are accounted for and covered under the insurance in the case of an accident or emergency. Speaking of insurance, you should always sign up for the extra coverage. Free coverage from most companies pays out pennies on the dollar. It’s worth the extra cost to make sure you can get a full value return on any damage.
