Top 7 Ways to Enjoy New Jersey in the Fall

Autumn, that time of year when the weather gets cooler, children return to school and leaves begin to change. If you’re looking for something different to do in New Jersey, autumn is a perfect time to explore and have fun with the entire family before winter sets in.

Here are our top seven suggestions for ways to enjoy the fall in New Jersey.

1. See the foliage.

New Jersey boasts some of America’s most picturesque and beautiful scenery, and Autumn is the perfect time to see the coppers, oranges, and crimsons grace its trees. While foliage conditions may vary significantly from year to year, the best times to see the changing leaves are usually during late September and early October.

For a mountain tour of autumnal colors, check out Stokes State Forest in Branchville and the Delaware Gap National Recreation Area.

For more historical tours, Waterloo Village and Washington Crossing State Park are excellent choices.

2. Get away during the off-season.

With tourists mostly gone, fall is the perfect time to plan a weekend getaway. Trenton, in the Delaware River Region, boasts museums and historical sites including the 1719 William Trent House Museum and the Old Barracks Museum.

Fancy an art exhibition? Check out Hoboken’s Barsky Gallery and Washington Street’s boutique shops.

Asbury Park‘s coastal creativity is a favorite, with plenty of nightlife and hot spots like the Silverball Museum, home of classic pinball games.

3. Did someone say ‘Cider’?

Nothing says, “Fall is here!” like apple cider from a local farm. Ralston Cider Mill Museum isn’t just a farm with a cider press – it’s a full-fledged cider mill and museum. Another excellent option is Chester’s Alstede Farms, where the variety of apples will tantalize your taste buds.

4. Halloween!

From the Haunted Seaport in Tuckerton to Smithville’s Zombie Walk, you’re sure to get chills down your spine by visiting one of New Jersey’s annual Halloween Events.

Sea Isle City’s annual Halloween Parade and Family Dance Party is a must-see for the entire family, and if you’re up for a spooktacular scavenger hunt, be sure to check out Wildwood’s Wild Halloween and More.

5. Autumn is harvest time in New Jersey.

With dozens of orchards and farms, you can pick your own – everything from a perfect jack-o-lantern pumpkin to apples. Or, find homemade jams and preserves at the dozens of roadside stands to dot the landscape.

6. Hayride time!

There’s nothing quite like a good old-fashioned hayride to usher in the season. Johnson’s Corner Farm in Medford and Monmouth Junction’s, VonThun’s Country Farm and Market are both excellent choices. VonThun’s offers fresh fruits, school tours, and fun family days throughout the year.

7. Get lost (and found!) in a corn maze.

Located in Manasquan, Atlantic Farms has a petting zoo, a farm market, pumpkin picking, hay rides, and its famous corn maze. Heaven Hill Farm in Vernon boasts a garden center, furniture, events, group tours, parties, and of course, a top-notch hayride.

Bundle up and have fun!
