Company History
Michael Federico founded Liberty Moving and Storage on Liberty Ave. in Jamaica, NY in 1939 with one truck and two helpers. From the beginning, his philosophy was to make the stressful process of moving as pleasant an experience possible for the customer. Over the next decade, Liberty would establish itself as a reliable and respected moving company for local residents.
In 1965, Michael Federico Jr. joined Liberty as a teenager, unloading trucks and working in the warehouse. Urged by his father, Michael Jr. concentrated on learning the moving business from the ground up and exposing himself to different areas within the company. The diverse knowledge he acquired would provide the foundation for him to move into a leadership role at the Company.
In 1973, Michael Jr. was appointed President of Liberty Moving & Storage. With the help of his partner Thomas Aleo, Liberty embarked on a growth phase by expanding aggressively into the areas of commercial moving, record storage and special products shipping. Their initiatives would take the Company from 8 employees to over 50 employees by the mid 80’s.
In the late 80’s, Mr. Federico’s two sons, Mike III and Anthony, joined Liberty working after school and during summer breaks by helping on the trucks and in the warehouse. Consistent with the family philosophy of learning the business from the ground up, they quickly learned the ins and outs of successful moving and the importance of developing a broad knowledge of all areas within the company.
In 1999, Mike Federico III was promoted to Vice President of Commercial Sales and in 2003 Anthony Federico was put in charge of the Household Sales & National Account Divisions.
In January of 2001, Liberty Moving was awarded for all its hard work by being accepted as a member to United Van Lines, the # 1 Van Line in the country. With over 150 employees performing over 5,000 moves a year, Liberty ranks as one of the largest full service moving companies in the Tri-State area.
A lot has changed since 1939, but one thing that hasn’t are the core values that has made Liberty the premium name in the moving industry.
